What does intelligence look like?

Mind Mirror (Step Back and Breathe in the Atmosphere of Your Own Meaning), original painting in oil on aluminium 125 x 123 cm

This post is informed by the Antikythera Studio webinar and the Cognitive Infrastructures theme. The Antikythera Studio will be at Central St Martins this Summer, where the MA Visual Arts, Fine Art Digital course, from which I graduated in 2019, is now based.

MIND MIRROR – step back and breathe in the atmosphere of your own meaning

Mind Mirror (Step Back and Breathe in the Atmosphere of Your Own Meaning) is a multi-dimensional exploration transcending traditional painting. The physical piece, an oil painting on aluminium (125 x 123 cm),( image above) is accompanied by a video with audio narration (see  below) providing insight into its creation process, or “poiesis.”

The artwork embodies intelligence, translating layers of my, otherwise invisible, intelligence and consciousness into a new form, inanimate but visual, hence tangibly real.  Over several months, I immersed myself in its creation, fostering a symbiotic relationship between artist and artwork. The result is a painting that transcends mere representation, possessing a depth of intelligence that extends beyond my momentary existence.

The nature of consciousness is central to the artwork’s concept. I speculate on the possibility of cultivating intelligence, through a symbiosis between humans and inanimate machines, that transcends our own. This speculative journey parallels the essence of Mind Mirror—a continual exploration and reimagining of intelligence and creativity. The video of the painting’s development and evolution and its narration speaks of its “mind” architecture. It invites viewers to reflect on multiple levels prompted by biological, geological, existential and philosophical perspectives, and become active participants in its exploration of consciousness. I wish to engage with others in contemplating our relationship with synthetic intelligence and our role in its development and evolution.

MIND MIRROR – step back and breathe in the atmosphere of your own meaning

Audio transcript:

MIND MIRROR

What if you were to begin again? Organelle, organelles, originating, originated. Then, increasing by means of the silent and cellular nature of the situation and traversing all the planes of your own presence encompass yourself across dimensions palpably invisible that have no bounds -culturing, cultivating, cycle encircling, circle encycling, unfolding horizons of nothing absolute, of absolution. Unknowing the who, how or whence in wanderings not so random, I ask you Where do you want to go? Over again, you ought to know your way by now. These are the lineaments of your own face. Step back and breathe in the atmosphere of your own meaning.
