Primary Field

The following post is a reflection on an earlier draft post I was unable to complete at the time. I would like to share it rather than forget it –

Returning to this primary field:

First body completed by Blue

Blue is a person?

an organ of this body

sky of its land

An instant,

I am here, we are here

Blue last because:

elemental it has the greatest extension

the last colour to be named, so they say

impossible to describe

other than by the eyes

dark light, light dark

I believe I detect something

a glimmer or echo

of The Starry Night

I did not expect or intend

a landscape to be found

Van Gogh + Whitman

Vincent based his Starry Night

on Whitman’s verse

this is true, is in in Vincent’s writing

by his own hand

an intoxicating vision

painting as poetry

the poem as the painting

as painting is to poetry –

I really can’t allow myself to fall in love again

I falter –

how can I measure up to this?

I breathe, I am alive

I do not fall, am safe knowing

You will find me beneath your boot sole,

Along with Whitman

and Vincent, it is the only thing I can do

it is unlike anything else

We are deathless

I believe I hold his hand

and perhaps, he mine

and this is better than actually having met

because we might have disliked each other

though I think not

I join the thread of consciousness

that began with the first cell,

once upon a time,

when this whole marvelous

dazzling world of us

was contained in a grain of sand

and this is the section of verse

which inspired Van Gogh to create his

Starry Night

in all its boundless sublimeness –

I am he that walks with the tender and growing night,

I call to the earth and sea half-held by the night.

Press close bare-bosom’d night—press close magnetic nourishing night!

Night of south winds—night of the large few stars!
Still nodding night—mad naked summer night.
Smile O voluptuous cool-breath’d earth!
Earth of the slumbering and liquid trees!
Earth of departed sunset—earth of the mountains misty-topt!
Earth of the vitreous pour of the full moon just tinged with blue!
Earth of shine and dark mottling the tide of the river!
Earth of the limpid gray of clouds brighter and clearer for my sake!
Far-swooping elbow’d earth—rich apple-blossom’d earth!
Smile, for your lover comes.
Prodigal, you have given me love—therefore I to you give love!
O unspeakable passionate love.
